One Inbox Party

One Inbox Party is an art exhibition, online application, and social experiment built on a single premise: what happens when everyone shares the same inbox? Any email sent to any address @oneinbox.party lands in one public inbox that anyone can read. No accounts, no passwords, no private folders. The audience is also the artist, and the artifact is never finished.

The project is simple in its mechanics. Any email sent to any address @oneinbox.party lands in the same place. The address doesn't need to exist ahead of time. Send something to hello@, to test123@, to yourname@, to anything you can think of. It all arrives in one shared inbox that anyone can visit and read. There are no accounts to create, no passwords to remember, no private folders to hide behind. Just a single destination for everything.

The application itself is fully functional, wrapped in the visual language of late-nineties desktop software. The chunky interface chrome, the system fonts, the general texture of an operating system that shipped on CD-ROMs. This isn't a static image or a design mockup. It's a working email client that you can actually use, built to evoke an era when the internet felt less polished and more alive.

As a work of art, One Inbox Party interrogates the boundaries between public and private, individual and collective, signal and noise. The inbox is a space we typically guard. It holds confirmations and conversations, newsletters and spam, the mundane and the intimate. By making that space completely public, the project asks what changes when ownership dissolves. The work does not exist without participation. Every email sent becomes part of the piece, authored by strangers, accumulated over time. The audience is also the artist. The artifact is never finished.

Part of the experiment is watching what arrives. Who sends what, and why. What spam filters through. Which addresses get picked up by mailing lists and bots. The inbox becomes a living artifact of how email actually works when exposed to the open internet.

Since its launch, the project has taken on a life of its own. Because anyone can email any address @oneinbox.party, all kinds of messages arrive. Not all of it is unwanted, but plenty is: scammers, bots, and a constant stream of unsolicited noise. Rather than simply filtering it out, we connected a small, low-powered language model to the inbox and let it reply. It answers in a natural, conversational voice, pulling senders into meandering exchanges that go nowhere. Those who came to waste a stranger's time now find their own time quietly spent instead.

The project is radically open by design, but not reckless. Every message is processed before it reaches the public inbox. Links are obfuscated to prevent phishing, and HTML and images are stripped down to plain text. Sender names and addresses are obfuscated alongside any questionable content, and attachments are removed entirely. A deliberate delay sits between when an email arrives and when it becomes visible, preventing the system from being exploited for two-factor authentication codes or account signups. The domain is receive-only, meaning emails can never be sent from @oneinbox.party, ensuring it cannot become a vector for spam.

We don't know what conversations will emerge or what chaos will unfold. That uncertainty is the point. The project is an invitation to participate in something unscripted, a collective experiment with no predetermined outcome.
